PERREO SHOCKOUT MIX

Ever since I heard reggaeton thunder from a soundsystem on a basketball court in a small village in Guatemala, I was converted. Daddy Yankee's Gasolina was the anthem, getting stupid amounts of rewinds. The Djs were mixing cds while screens showing reggaeton videos played as they roughly cut up the hammering beats for the whole town's monthly fiesta. The Dem Bow riddim shattered the stillness of the mountainous coutryside as the perreo beat dragged this particular Mayan village into the 20th century.

Two years later, reggaeton has blown up internationally, making massive stars out of Tego, Daddy and Don Omar with loads more coming through like Tito & Plan B. What started out as Panama's answer to Jamaican dancehall in the early 90s has exploded. Puerto Rico is spilling out more reggaeton MCs than ever like a latin music revolution that is gripping the US Hip Hop mainstream. Its slowly coming to Europe too with numerous underground nights in London
like Heatwave, Latin Flow
and Candela.

This summer Don Omar played Brixton Academy and the Carnival Pueblo in Burgess park saw a show by Andy Boy and a large amount of Mum scaring grinding. London's even throwing up its own homegrown MCs like Cajevara, Cultura Londres and MC Magico.

In Europe's little piece of carribean, Tenerife, is where its properly kicking off though. Tito played a massive reggaeton festival last year and Perreo is the Island's new soundtrack. Somehow I don't think it will be the new Ibiza though, more like Aiya Napa with less aggro and bigger T-shirts.

Reggaeton-the Movie is not far from its UK release. Her Royal highness J-Lo is credited as one of the film's producers. I'm reliably informed, by my mate whos seen it, that its an 8 Mile-esque bag of wank.

Anyway forget about that shit, lets get down to business. I've finally got round to doing a reggaeton mixtape with some of Puerto Rico's finest for you to hear the ruffest cuts from Latin America. Its fun and free. Go get it.
