At my university canteen people just stared at their mouldy, barely thawed sandwiches with a blank, depressed face, rain pouring at the window, only raising a smile when someone dropped a plate. Not at Howard University, DC. Its all impromptu dance routines like a real life Grease. And what is this ghettobass hammer thats slaying Chi Town's line dance favouring wedding dance floors?
Its DJ Chip's Chicago Juke slide (Pimp Walk Slide), a juke version of that infamous DJ Caspers Cha Cha slide song (no really) and the bassline from Plastic dreams. Resulting in an curious, slightly eerie mixture of 90s Big room Euro house, juke bootyclapping beats and a bad novelty workout song. But it works for me! Any takers?
Now learn the moves ready for those Christmas parties. Unless, like myself, you don't live in Chicago. In which case i'll be flailing foolishly around to Heartbroken and Slade. Oh.

Welcome to a new guest post slot on Ghetto Bassquake. Occasionally we're gonna have a special guest blog hermano offer up a selection of 3 tunes. Whatever they want. The first one comes from JP from Montreal's awesome
Masala blog which you probably know about anyway if you read this. Today JP breaks out some Soca anthems in time for the TnT carnival....
Carnival 2008 is comin' fast !!! An early one this year, from february 1st to 5th in Rio, parade of the bands on feb. 4th and 5th in Trinidad. We'll keep you update of what's going on on the blog and the radio show as well. Here's my 3 favorite soca songs right now:
Machel Montano - Whining Season (direct link)
Destra - High (direct link)
Kes & the Band - Right Dey (direct link)
I like this 'Right Dey' song, a good one to put you in the carnival mood ! Some are already predicting the victory of Kes... Destra is always a serious player, her last year hit 'I Dare You' was playing over and over in TnT and she already has 2 songs on this year chart (with 'High' and 'Hooked'). Machel is last year king, with a massive victory over Shurwayne Winchester with 'Jumbie'. I'm pretty excited to see how he will push the genre this year, 'Whining Season' is slow but good enough to start the party and clearly evocative about what carnival is all about...

Once in a while I'm going to post some of my favourite tunes from the movies. First off its Harvey Kietel's booze party anthem in Mean Streets. From that classic scene where he staggers around the bar to this crazy banger.
The Chips-Rubber Biscuit

Wikipedia says that Narrows
is a Maverick Electronic composer. I say he's an Unsung Garage Heatmaker who's bought us bangers like G.A.R.A.G.E.
And we need to recognise somone who makes basslines straight from hell itself.

Diplos just done a sweet new podcast on new school Cumbia business from Argentina & Colombia featuring loads of bangers from those boys killing it in Buenos Aires. Track back to get some.
Whats Up Buenos Aires can tell you alot especially about the Zizek night. So much good shit going on down there, i wanna go back. Damn.
This is what XLR8R said.
And don't forget Villa Diamante's Muy Bastard has loads of good stuff for the downloading.
This song is on Diplo's mix, I've put it up before but its still sounds so fresh and needs a reload. The Gaiteros of San Jancinto were from the chillin caribbean coast of Colombia.
They were one of the original cumbia bands and were on some cumbia trance tip back then. Antonio "Toño" Fernández (above pic) was 'the first gaitero to popularize putting words to gaitero music'. Its amazing.

Well don't worry, the pole is closed and its now time to peep the results. This is what you want more of and I can tell you its not Jam & Base Musik- What the hell is that? Feel like i'm missing out on something.
The top three.

Going to see Dizzee and Newham Generals tonight. Braapp, clack clack boom etc...
Here's Dizzee spitting over the official Dubstep anthem of the year, getting crazy amounts of daytime radio play. Sorry its a radio rip so Semtex is babbling away on it. Buy it proper when its released.
Coki & Benga ft. Dizzee - Night
And here's his southern collaboration with UGK with some sex rhymes from Dizzee.

I've never been that big into music from Africa. I know thats a criminal thing to say as theres so many flavas out there but nothings ever really grabbed me that much (and if anyone wants to educate me with some suggestions, please go for it in the comments). But I saw a band recently thats changing that. Tinariwen are one of those desert rebel blues bands from Mali. Its kind of hypnotic, soulful, circular, offbeat, blues that sounds so fresh right now.

Estevao Silva da Conceicao has spent 20 years making his own incredible Gaudiesque house, The Casa De Pedra, in a favela in Sao Paulo.
Not many people can say this:
"When I arrived in the Parc Guell, it's then that I thought that the work was very similar to my house. And I thought, wow, how could I have built something so like his work without ever seeing it."

Some Bassline pressure for you from oop nirth. I love the evolution of UK B-line music since Jungle>Speed Garage>2 Step> Grime> And now Bassline 4x4 sickness.

I've just returned from a short trip to NYC. Thats a fun town.
On TV I saw a commercial for the Samsung Juke phone. It features a lame juke 'style' song thats a bit like a crap version of Watch My Feet and some guy doing an ipod dance. I found it mildy depressing.
Luckily later that day I picked up this cracking new cd packed full of fresh unmixed juke licks. So sweet. Just another incredible Benzi mix.
I see you DJ Benzi
Buy it here
Souljah Boy- Crank Dat (Juke Jams Remix)
Also I picked up the incredible new record by South Rakkas Crew which I sincerely urge you to buy here. Get some at Mad Decent.

I've just been getting into Mento music. Its generally brilliant from what i've heard by Dr.Auratheft. Lyrically it is hilarious and bizarre. Calypso comes from Trinidad but Mento is more like the bridge between Jamaican Folk and Rocksteady which became Reggae. But for some reason the bands still called themselves Calypsonians. The more I've listened to this stuff, the funnier it gets. I'm not kidding, it really sticks in your head.
Lots of the tunes are still used in dancehall like the much rinsed Bam Bam and Galang Gal by T.O.K; which you can hear cunningly spliced with Lord Composer's Mandeville Road on Wayne & Wax's Blogariddims mix.
Mento Madness has just been reissued and features loads of bangers all produced by a very talented bloke called Stanley Motta.
Lord Messan & His Calypsonians - Linstead Market
Mento is highly recommended listening if you've had a few drinks. Or even better here.
I like to think Che and Sandino inspired some pretty badass revolutionary music like Kortatu here rocking the hell out of Managua.
Who I think were pretty inspired by The Clash and their Sandinista! album.
Who also went on to make sick musically revolutionary Hip Hop joints with Futura 2000.
So thanks to Che and Sandino for indirectly giving us Hip Hop, Graffiti and Punk! Well..sort of.
Kortatu - Nicaragua Sandinista
The Clash - Washington Bullets

Vegas has been coming back hard this year with a slew of fresh tunes. I was lucky enough to see him live at Carnival one year with Elephant Man, Sean Paul, Lady Saw, Harry Toddler, Kip Rich & Lexus. It was siiiiiick.
This absolute banger is on the Cheerful riddim and is currently rocking the Ghetto Bassquake soundsystem alot.
Mr Vegas - Da Ting Deh

Thats Carlos Gardel, the king of Tango, chilling with Maradona in La Boca.
So much good shit coming out of Argentina. This is the best cumbia tune I have heard.
Turby Schmidt - Caballeros con Descuento
Turby Schmidt also makes techno. Get some more on his myspace.

The most memorable frizbee I've ever played was in the Salar De Uyuni salt desert in Bolivia, the largest salt flat in the world. It only lasted about five minutes beacuse we pretty much collapsed due to the lack of oxygen. It used to be a lake 40,000 years ago but it dried up leaving behind a whole lotta salt at a very high altitude. If you ever get the chance to visit it, you will see red and green coloured lakes, mind bending rock formations, giant rabbits, flamingos, a cactus covered island and some of the strangest scenery on the planet. Its like visiting Mars for a few days by jeep.

Mr. Jones is back with a class bit of Houston Badness (thanks to These Rocks Pop). Raising the game by not only reminding us of his myspace but his phone number too. Strong.
Mike Jones - Turning Headz

Beenie Man - Jump And Wine (vinyl rip)
Off the new album from Mexican Institute of Sound some twisted mexifun from DF.
Mexican Institute of sound - La Kebradita

In the UK we have a major TV channel called ITV. On the whole its pretty terrible, with a programming-lite policy of soap operas and phone in quiz shows. However in the 70s and 80s they financed and screened documentaries by film maker and journalist John Pilger. He is one of the few UK journalists that has been tirelessly reporting the severe political and economical problems that face the peoples of Latin America, that the UK media generally chooses to ignore. In 1983, ITV screened Pilger's film 'Nicaragua: A Nation's right to survive' which exposed the massacres in Nicaragua by the US backed contras against the Sandinista revolutionary government supporters.
Last night ITV screened an excellent new film by Pilger (questionable trailer above) about the resistance of the Latin American people against the apalling trade sanctions, strangulating economical grip and outright murder of the US government’s current foreign policy in Latin American countries.
It was much better that "How clean is your house" which what they normally screen.

I've never been big on UK hip Hop but sometimes in the right medium, there is some flow and energy that is too heavy for words. The US style of rapping don't come natural to us and never really has. But since Jamaica brought their ragga influence we got our own ting. Our rap style comes from the pirate radio and rave MCing culture, crowd hypment, which is why for me, it works best in garage, grime and jungle. At 02:25 in this video is what i'm talking about.
Just listen to the flow of Wiley and co. on this 4 x 4 riddim by Slimzee. Holy shit.
Slimzee ft. Pay as you Go - forgot the name (Zshare)
And if that hasn't convinced you, Stryders going to show you what I mean even before his voice broke.
Tinchy Stryder - freestyle (Zshare)
And i'm pretty sold on this crazy mix by London's Faggatronix blending garagey beats with grime and crunk vocals to filthy but brilliant effect. For me this is so much more fun than dubstep.
Faggatronix - 4x4 Birthday mix

I don't know anything about the transglobal economics of alcohol brands, but I do know that Skol was a really weak tasteless beer my Dad used to drink in the 80s. It may be a surprise for UK readers to know that Skol is the biggest beer brand in Brazil. I think it might be the Stella of the favelas and they're even sponsoring funk balls. Which make this song the 'Cigarettes & Alcohol' of baile funk. Don't worry, its not like Oasis but it does mention a couple of things they like. This is more punk rock than the majority of bands in the UK. There I said it.
Unknown - Montagem Coca Skol (Zshare)
But more importantly, but what happened to the viking man and remind me of his name ?

Some quality summertime mixes :
Some serious London action from Faggatronix mixing up UKG and electrocrunk freshness. This should be more popular than funky 'ouse right now.
Word The Cat tears it up with African, Bashment and Bassline garage.
Some random old Paul Devro mix in full pardy effect.
Disco Devil, a hot reggae blog from Brazil comes in with a Rodigan Dublate mix.
Zombie Disco Squad talk frankly about Bassline Booty & Baile.

Yesterday I had my eardrums nearly blown out by Buraka Som Sistema in a very hot, small, sweaty tent at Lovebox. And I can safely say they are not fucking around. Oh. My. God. My man hit it HARD. They didn't even have Petty and the dancers. Just one guy playing a set of sub-bass, acid tweaking Kuduro bombs. It was awesome and had me grinning like a fool for the entire set. I think alot of the stuff was Buraka productions and it really comes alive on a (Mad) decent soundsystem. He even dropped some grime in the middle of the set. Strong. If they come to your town, don't even think about not going.

Straight off the parrilla, another flame grilled slice of Argentinian cumbia soaked in Chimichurri. Chancha Via Circuito is on the hype screwed and chopped tip.
Chancha Via Circuito - Cumbia Malembe
And from Bolivia, more sleepy cumbia beats from another Argentinian, Sonido Martines. He's doing a mix for Rupture's excellent new radio show on 18th Juy.
Sonido Martines - Vuela Pajarito Rebajado
Yet more heat from Argentina, check Princesa. She's hammering the barrios with her fiesty Reggaeton-dancehall. Lots of downloadable beats on her myspace.
Princesa - I Feel So Good

Monsiuer Poirier has been having some illegal fun with Khiasma from Masala and Sixtoo throwing a rave out the back of a van under a bridge somewhere in Montreal. Video here. If you did that in London, everyone would be shot by the police. Probably.
Ghislain also sent me this bhangra soca beauty. Like Matterhorn on holiday in Goa. I know its been on a few blogs already so this is for the snoozers. Carnival Banger.
Bunji Garlin & JMC Triveni - Doi Festival (Ghislain Poirier remix)(Zshare)

Big up to Ray at my old work for pointing me in the direction of somwhere very special. Quite literally a 'Bashment Market' ! Picked up some hot new JA mixtapes. Let me share the FYA with you.
Firstly from Mavado's Amazing Grace mixtape. Don't know who the rapper is but its downright gold. A synth overload souldrenched anthem. If you're not feeling this it, you're wierd.
Mavado - Nah waan fi see me rise (Zshare)
On the addictive Spanish Town riddim from a few months ago, Cecile. A new flow and all round party starter of a tune. The beat on this just stomps along riding some hardassed flamenco strumming. Its always when I'm bored of dancehall something like this comes along. DJs - If you play this out and people don't dance, I want my money back.
Cecile - Party (zshare)
And finally an old classic for my girl simply because she loves it.
Eric Donaldson - Cherry Oh! Baby (Zshare)
