Secousse This Friday

Hold Tight London.

This Friday Secousse brings you one of the biggest players in the Tropical scene. Fresh from performing with M.I.A. at Coachella, AFRIKAN BOY is coming to smash it up with a special live set. Joining him will be our awesome High-life house band, A.J.Holmes & The The Hackney Empire as well as worldwide ghetto bass pressure from The Secousse Sound System (Radioclit, A.J. Holmes and me).

Its going to be another slammer. Come down and say Hi.

Free before 8pm !!!!

Why Don't You Believe Me?

Bay Area DJ, Aebl Dee and I are starting a new weekly night in Oakland called Descendants United.  Our first night will be on Thursday May 28th, at Luka's Tap Room, and will be featuring a special guest... more info later.

Aebl recently spent some time in Dominica and brought up to me their local Carnaval music Bouyon.  I'm a sucker for Carnaval music, so I had to point to the two biggest bands out of Dominica Triple Kay International, and WCK.

Both bands mix Bouyon with other caribbean styles, and Triple Kay has one track that includes Lil Wayne's A Millie.  Aebl showed me a video of them gettin' hype til 7am (as all proper African diaspora parties should.)

That also reminds me that I've been meaning to post some remixes by the prolific Tim Turbo, who regularly produces mixes at Seen site and was putting great mixes up at Cyan Wait before.  He did a beautiful version of "Me Neva Believe U..."  The 80's ballad sounding tune by Mavado, that made me sentimental and want to cry...  I mean be tough and manly and gangster just like Mavado.

Here is my absolute all time favorite Tim Turbo remix, a mix of "Flashing Lights" by Kanye West and a tune by WCK, the Bouyon group.  This STAYS in my virtual crate!

And Bay Area, CA folks, keep a look out for more info on Descendants United!

Omar Souleyman's Syrian TeKnO

Omar Souleyman makes the kind of street records I love, if this Syrian Folk-Pop isn't 'ethnotechno', I don't know what is. He's already put out 500 cassettes in Syria and is playing at Sonar this year. I know little about Middle Eastern music at the best of times but I can hear that his jams have an unmistakable rough grimey edge that make it almost thugged out Syrian party music. and it is party music. The clattering electronic beats almost remind me of sped up reggaeton dem bow riddims combined with unrelenting hyperspeed mantralike keyboards. His vocals are a stream of conciousness Cutty Ranks-esque freestyle flow apparently called mawal singing. Feel the weight..

The awesome Sublime Frequencies label are re-releasing a compilation of his best work from 1994-2006. And the big news is (for UK peoples) is that you can catch him on a UK tour this May.

Ringtone Tribal

El Sonidito (Ruidito) - Remix - More related videos from Asterpix

Driving home from work last night, they played this remix (or something like it) on Univision's station La Kalle. Is Tribal Cumbia making it's way onto commercial radio? Where do the lines between Techno Cumbia and Tribal Cumbia end? How can this be tribal cumbia when the original was Duranguense? So many questions! I believe the one in the video is DJ Tino's.

Pirates of London

Big Ups again to Elijah & Skilliam from for another heavy set on Rinse. Their massive show is singlehandedly getting me back into grime (specially coz we get a l'il shout at 02:50!). So much London FYA.

Download it here (mediafire)

Jams like this are killing it for me right now. Grime moving into some dark 8 bar rave stab pressure.

SF Benefit for Glow Zambia

Otis Lounge Ya'll. I seem to keep gravitating toward this place on Thursday nights, but it's a great space so I'm not complaining! But this time we takin a break from the Highlife to draw attention to and support the efforts in helping young ladies in rural Zambia get an education.

DJ Sneaky P of San Francisco, who blogs here is organizing, and we'll be playing along side Mo Sickness Crew D_ro Cyclyst and JO.

Here's a nice bassy cumbia remix by Sneaky P:

Hernan Builes-Chela (Sneaky P Remix) (Direct Download)

I'm going to go digging for some Zambia music. And try my best to represent for Southern Africa. This should be a lot of fun and at the same time will remind us to keep our global consciousness-connectedness open.

Rapido! Ahorita!

When it comes to the the shear innovative riddims of the Caribbean, it don't get much more tropical than Dominican republics' Speed merengue. I heard this stuff booming everywhere in Central America, there's even loads of remixes of rap tunes blended with bachata guitar samples and raved up salsa horns which sound truly fresh in the afternoon sun. Its like a cup of coffee for you ears (probably with bit of rum in it).

Murkles just sent us his sweet new mix.

He says

"Hard digi riddims started coming out of the Dominican republic in the mid 90’s and hadn”t really crossed over outside the Dominican diaspora since, but mad decent’s new signing Maluca got some kind of 8-bit SM vibes going on. Tropical bass jams to blow your sunny summer, Here’s 40 minutes of hyperspeed badness for you…."

Murkles - Speed Merengue Mix

and Maluca's Diplo produced new single which I'm definitely feeling.

and if you missed this one I posted a few weeks ago, get Moreno Negron's badman anthem

Mexican Rave Cave

I've been waiting for this for time. Toy Selectah's just hit us with his crazy brand of Mexcican fire power in one neat package of Raverton Bangingness. 15 of his remixes smashing up loads of jams from A Milli to My Moon My Man. It's bloody awesome, the kind of music you'd hear after an all day drinking bender staggering around Mexico city and ending up in some dark, sweaty club where you loose your mind/clothes/shit.

Git It....

I had a li'l chat with him which you can read here.

You're a Jerk!

We started a music production club at the high school I work at in San Francisco, and the youth are doing some pretty impressive work. Hopefully when we polish some of it up, I'll be able to share it.

The other day when I was just passing by our "studio" I heard this banging beat and what sounded like to me Steve Urkel saying, "Do the Jerk" or "You a Jerk," and one of the kids doing a... yes Jerking dance. I went to one of the students and meekly asked, "what's this?" Meaning to go and research this Jerk, I never got around to it, but thanks to Noz at Cocaine Blunts, its details have been illuminated and come to find out, surprise, surprise, it's a movement! And not just that, a movement inspired by Bay Area faves D-Lo and Sleepy D.

A Noz sponsored Jerkin download kit here: Download

I'm old. I know this cause I played the Stanky Leg at our assembly on Wednesday. And while the crowd went wild and a bunch of kids jumped on stage to stank their best leg, I'm now wishing I would have had The Jerk at my disposal to observe the ensuing mayhem. By the way, as Noz observes, my current batch of youth love and (weirdly for me) look up to The Pack, who are now I think in their early 20's. I am 28.

And while we're talking about Nigeria...

This Thursday April 2nd in San Francisco will be the latest installment of The Highlife. We will be featuring Nigerian Club music and hip hop, also known as Naija Jams, and hip hop and club from around the world.

Wande Coal-Bumper 2 Bumper (zshare)

Illbliss feat. Terry G:

These are both from DJ Mighty Mike's page, which is a great source for all things going on in the Nigerian music industry. He is currently out of Atlanta and just put out this great mixtape.

He is also a member of the U.S.(?) based Nigerian DJ collective Naija DJ's, who seem to be a huge network of cats representing the crew across the U.S. A group of DJ's representing a country and having conferences and meetings in the diaspora? Very cool idea. Where the Salone DJ's at?

But if your in the Bay Area this Thursday, be sure to come check out the Highlife at Otis Lounge in San Francisco. Chief Boima & Shawn Dub 10pm to 2am, No Cover!
