You've heard the mixtape and it was hot. With this banging cover specially commissioned by Ivorian artist B P Konan, The Very Best's album, Warm Heart of Africa (Rough Trade Pre-order) is already shaping up to be a classic. Dropping on Moshi Moshi on 14th September. For now here is the Architecture in Helsinki remix of the lead single.

Radio Hackney Empire Part 1

If you've been reading this blog for a while you'll know that we're massive fans of the awesome A.J. Holmes. As well as DJing at Secousse (get his mix here) he has an amazing High life band called The Hackney Empire who you're gonna be hearing a lot about very soon. He just did a great show on Diesel U Music playing a tonne of incredible summery good vibes African and tropical music. Git It.

A.J. Holmes on Diesel U Music - Part One (sendspace)

Look out for Part 2 coming soon with The Hackney Empire playing a live session with Papa Milo.

Secousse BK Showdown

Broooooklyyynn!!!! A pretty special night. The first ever Secousse US was a hurricane. Massive shout outs to everyone who came down and partied with us. Felt like a house party, especially when all the girls got on stage with Esau.

Truly amazing shows from Janka Nabay and The Very Best who both smashed it, leaving the crowd screaming for more. And a big shout out to all the DJs who killed it - Radioclit, Uproot Andy, Matt Shadatek, Mixed Blood, Jason Pants & Chaz Requina. Vaguely remember it ended with people doing the limbo under a blow up palm tree to soukous jams.

Andy dropped the tune of the night.

and here it is.....

Soy Afro Boliviano y Ke?

Rough-Cut Sample: "Nosotros los de la Saya" (“We of the Saya”) from AbNomad Media on Vimeo.

An interesting documentary project on Afro Bolivians and their struggle for rights and culture. They're trying to raise money to complete post-production, so if you'd like to help with financial contributions, here is information from the Vimeo Page:

This video is a trailer for this documentary-in-progress in order to raise funds for completion. For more information, please visit, or write to us at

Also, read this article about rapper Abraham Bojorquez, Godfather of Bolivian Rap (influenced by time spent with Afro Brazilians), and his recent passing.

Download Ukamau y Ké album “Para La Raza” by clicking here

Track 5 Estamos Con La Raza is about the struggle of Afro Bolivians in particular, and was partly the inspiration for the documentary.

On Va Coupe

Another great Mokobe on Coupe Decale video. DJ Kitoko is from Club Alize in Paris. Keep em coming, although my only complaint is that the Teaser got me excited for some epic ride through the streets of Conakry, and then they just give me a flashy night club, but you really can't mess with that roll call of countries scene.

When I pass through Paris, I gotta get my Africa is the Future Tees.

Here was the Teaser:

Don't Make me get Serious

Maxwell D is one of the UK's most underrated MCs. He might of fallen out with Wiley & co. but his new Funky tracks are solid. Check Heatwave's great post. His flow on Blackberry Hype is like a throwback to his classics like serious. Cowbells alert on Sticky's funky remix.

Ghetto Bassquake Takes Stockholm

Oh my days this was a banging party. Couldn't have been better. An awesome crowd, venue and the music was pretty good too, ahem.

Massive Shout Outs to our awesome High Life hosts Anna & Seb who killed it in true Ghetto Bassquake style.

At one point the dancefloor was so rammed I  got stuck there with a round of vodka tonics and couldn't get back to the decks.

I played lots of funky

Chief Boima absolutely smashed it with his white hot Afro House party bombs.

We sampled the Stockholm's post club street cuisine as the sun came up.

Boima went for hotdog & mash in a bread cone thing. I went for the french Hotdog.

Left My Heart in San Francisco... Bay

Sendin love out to the Bay, missin' ya'll!

Today I saw some kids in the Stockholm Subway dressed like they should be in the New Boyz video. So, I decided to share this Turf Feinz video (my friend Yoram's crew) with my hosts Anna and Sebastian to give them a taste of Bay Area culture. Oakland represent!

Buraka - Black Diamond Mixtape

Photo: Bjørnar Håland Flickr

Gotta say that I love this band as much as I did when I first heard them a couple of years ago, maybe more.
Their thunderous new mixtape has so many brainblowing jams and guests on it that I feel phsically sick. Is that weird?

Faultless production, bone rattling percussion and some awesome guest vocals from Afrikan Boy to Aloe Blacc.

More importantly this mixtape reminds that an estimated 3.7 million people have died in Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, and Sierra Leone in conflicts fuelled by diamonds. Thats 3.7 million.
